Wearside law firm Sweeney Miller is capping off celebrations of 10 years in business with a high-ranking change to take the firm ahead over the next decade.
The Ashbrooke-based solicitors, which celebrated its 10th anniversary last year, has just welcomed Surbhi Vedhara as a new partner.
Surbhi has bought founder member Peter Sweeney’s stake in the business making way for his early retirement.
Her new role will focus on forging ahead and expanding the commercial property and commercial arm of the business – a rapidly growing sector.
Peter will continue to work with Sweeney Miller on a consultancy basis in its successful litigation and personal injury department as Surbhi moves up within the expanding firm, which will keep the same name.
Senior partner Paul Miller said: “This represents a new chapter for Sweeney Miller as we begin our second decade in business. Surbhi has proved to be a highly valuable member of the team and her rapid rise is just reward for her sterling work with clients in the region and across the UK.
“As a firm we are definitely seeing life return to the property market through the conveyancing work we are handling and our commercial business work generally is increasing which bodes well for the immediate future.”
Born in Mumbai, Surbhi left India to study law at Newcastle University before joining a Tyneside firm on graduation. She moved to Sweeney Miller in 2008.
Surbhi, who is fluent in the languages Hindi, Punjabi, Marathi and Urdu, said: “The North East is a vibrant place and working in Sunderland I can see the vast potential of the city. We consider ourselves to be a progressive commercial law firm and also believe we can attract more business from across the North East. That’s my challenge and one I relish.
“I am very proud to take up a partnership within Sweeney Miller which I believe has a great future not just in Sunderland but in handling work across the region and beyond.”
Sweeney Miller held a business reception at Sunderland High School’s historic Langham Tower building, close to their Mowbray Road headquarters, where staff and associates celebrated Surbhi’s new partnership, Peter’s move to consultancy and the firm changing to LLP (limited liability partnership) status.
