Pupils at St Mary’s Primary School in Sunderland got creative to promote Road Safety Week.

The school children joined forces with city law firm Sweeney Miller who challenged them to design a poster to spread the road safety message.

Members of the Sweeney Miller team gave pupils from St Mary’s Eco Club a talk on road safety before inviting them to get creative.

A week later during Road Safety Week, the UK’s flagship road safety event, Lindsey Christie from Sweeney Miller called back in to judge the pupil’s efforts.

road safety week at Sweeney Miller with St MarysThe winning poster was designed by Louis McKenzie of year 9 who came up with his own slogans At Night Shine Bright and Arrive Alive.

Louis was overjoyed to take the winning prize of a Samsung Tablet donated by Sweeney Miller, while all the pupils received electronic flashing reflectors to keep them visible in the dark.

Lindsey Christie of Sweeney Miller said: “The standard of designs was extremely high making the judging very difficult indeed. In the end it was the slogans that gave young Louise the edge.

“The whole group were fantastic and enthusiastically threw themselves into the challenge.”

St Mary’s School already runs a number of campaigns to promote road safety and recently did a Giant Walk to school in aid of the Brake charity which promotes greater care on our roads.

Next year Sweeney Miller and St Mary’s hope to run the event across the whole school.

Road Safety Week is now in its 18th year and ran by road safety charity week Brake which aims to inspire communities to take action to promote life-saving messages. This year the theme of the annual campaign is Look Out For Each Other.
