Since qualifying in 1996 with a well-known top legal 500 regional firm, he has practised in many areas of law and works in our Commercial and Corporate Department.
For over 20 years Chris has advised on a wide range of commercial contracts and provided advice to SME directors and shareholders on many aspects of corporate law. With his previous experience as an independent financial adviser, Chris has a strong interest in the legal aspects of taxation.
Chris is a former Professional Footballer and his experience in the professional game extends from advising on player contracts and representation agreements, to assisting in visa applications.
Chris is appointed as an Independent Member to the Football Association’s Judicial Panel in London. He frequently sits on a range of regulatory commissions, dealing with a variety of disciplinary and integrity related matters that include on-field offences, breaches of agents and transfer regulations, to anti-doping and match fixing offences.
On the commercial side, Chris has advised on a whole range of matters ranging from the sale of software apps on Google to the drafting of a debenture security for a company pension fund loan, which involved providing taxation advice on permissible investments and potential penalties. He has recently advised on the redrafting of a tax investigation defence policy, underwritten by a major UK insurer.
Last year, Chris represented a well-known Soccer Academy in the North East that was awarded, what was believed to be, the largest value services contract by a Local authority, to provide various coaching services to a School Academy.
He also advises on a range of company matters including company sales, demergers and reconstructions, re-organisations and shareholder agreements. Chris can also provide advice on obtaining transactional tax clearances from HMRC and making related elections. He has recently advised on issues of tax residency and a related double tax treaty and has additional experience in handling HMRC tax investigations and working with Tax Consultants in this area.
