Mental Health First Aid course helps create happier, healthier workplace

MANAGEMENT at Sweeney Miller Law have been undergoing Mental Health First Aid training

In order to recognise and deal with potential staff problems as they arise.

The two-day course, delivered by Tim Ford of Live Well Training, covers mental health issues such as stress, depression and anxiety and gives guidance in spotting the signs and being proactive.

It also looks at ways of maintaining and promoting good mental health in the workplace.

Company co-founder Paul Miller said: “The course has been brilliant, really eye-opening and I would recommend it to all companies out there.

“It is good in the way it challenges preconceptions and it supports ways to make sure that people feel happy and secure in the workplace. It also leads to a better understanding of what others might be going through in their personal lives and how better to deal with a whole range of situations.”
Tim said: “I’ve enjoyed delivering the course and was really pleased with staff engagement.

“The legal sector can be a highly stressful occupation and, recognising this, Paul and Surbhi invited me to deliver some training for Sweeney Miller Law.

“It’s great to see companies being forward-thinking like this, and taking an interest in mental health issues which have so often been ignored or put to one side.

“Supporting mental health in the workplace is not just a corporate responsibility.

“Staff who have positive mental health are more productive and businesses who promote a progressive approach to mental health can see a significant impact on business performance, so it’s about good business too.”

Government statistics show mental health issues account for almost 70 million days off sick per year, the most of any health condition, costing the UK economy between £70-£100 billion annually.

Tim has over a decade’s’ experience within mental health training and has been delivering Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training for the past seven years.

He said: “MHFA is useful in any walk of life. In the workplace, we teach managers, staff members and business owners how to identify, understand and help an employee who may be developing a mental health problem.”

Live Well Training is an approved provider of Mental Health First Aid courses and, to date, Mental Health First Aid courses have been delivered to over 330,000 people across the country.
