Sweeney Miller school road safety poster competition

Pupils at St Mary’s Primary School in Sunderland showed their artistic side to help promote road safety in the city.

The school children joined forces with city law firm Sweeney Miller who challenged them to design a poster to spread the road safety message.

Members of the Sweeney Miller team gave hundreds of pupils from St Mary’s a talk on road safety before inviting them to get creative.

The talk was given during Road Safety Week, the UK’s flagship road safety event,

before Lindsey Christie from Sweeney Miller called back in to the school to judge the pupil’s efforts.

The winning poster was designed by Emelia Fishburn-Parkin of year 6 who came up with her own slogans Arrive Alive and Stay Safe.

Emelia was overjoyed to take the winning prize of an Acer tablet donated by Sweeney Miller, while all the hundreds of other pupils who took part received fun goodie bags.

Second prize was won by year 2 pupil Finn Cole and third prize went to Alexander Campbell from the reception year.

This is the second year Sweeney Miller has run the event in the school. Last year it was restricted to one school year group but this year it was open to the whole school. It was such a success that Sweeney Miller is considering running a wider event across a number of schools in the city.

Lindsey Christie of Sweeney Miller said: “Once again we were bowled over by the high standard of work and the amount of effort that had gone in to each one.

“All the team at Sweeney Miller got in involved in the judging which took over a week from start to finish. Eventually we had to narrow it down to one winner which stood out from the pack.

“The whole school were fantastic and enthusiastically threw themselves into the challenge.”

St Mary’s School already runs a number of campaigns to promote road safety and recently did a Giant Walk to school in aid of the Brake charity which promotes greater care on our roads.

Sweeney Miller Solicitors, based in Ashbrooke, have helped numerous road accident victims over the years get much-needed support to help them fund vital recovery and treatment costs.

The nature of this work has brought their dedicated team of legal experts face to face with the harsh realities many victims face following road accidents.
