Sweeney Miller Law is delighted to announce that we have been awarded SHINE Intermediate Accreditation, recognising our commitment to creating a positive workplace for our people while making a meaningful contribution to our communities and the environment.
Developed through the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority and championed by North East Mayor Kim McGuinness, SHINE is an employer accreditation scheme designed to celebrate organisations that demonstrate excellence in employee wellbeing, social responsibility and sustainable business practices.
The SHINE framework encourages employers to align their business practices with the needs of their people and communities, helping to create workplaces where employees can thrive while supporting wider economic and social growth across the North East.
Achieving Intermediate Accreditation is a significant milestone in our journey and reflects the values that underpin everything we do at Sweeney Miller Law.
Our SHINE Journey
The SHINE accreditation framework is built around five key areas, known as “Beams”. Organisations progress through different levels of accreditation as they demonstrate excellence across each area.
To achieve Foundation Accreditation, organisations must successfully complete:
Beam One: Prioritising Employee Health, Safety and Wellbeing
This beam focuses on creating a safe, supportive and healthy working environment through wellbeing initiatives, mental health support, inclusivity and strong health and safety practices.
To achieve Intermediate Accreditation, organisations must also complete:
Beam Two: Community, Net Zero and Social Responsibility
This beam recognises employers that actively support their local communities, encourage volunteering, prioritise responsible business practices and demonstrate a commitment to environmental sustainability.
At Sweeney Miller Law, community engagement and responsible business are central to our culture.
Over the years, our team has supported numerous charities, community organisations, educational institutions and local initiatives across Sunderland, Newcastle and the wider North East. From fundraising and volunteering to work experience opportunities, university partnerships and sponsorship activities, we are passionate about making a positive difference beyond the legal services we provide.
The accreditation also reflects the importance we place on employee wellbeing, professional development and maintaining a supportive and inclusive workplace where our people can succeed.
Looking Ahead: Advanced Accreditation
While we are incredibly proud to have achieved Intermediate Accreditation, we are already looking ahead to the next stage of the SHINE journey.
To achieve Advanced Accreditation, organisations must complete three additional beams:
Beam Three – Employee Voice, Communications and Representation
Creating meaningful opportunities for employees to share ideas, provide feedback and help shape the future direction of the organisation.
Beam Four – Opportunity for All, Inclusivity, Upskilling and Employee Empowerment
Supporting learning, development, inclusivity and career progression to ensure everyone has the opportunity to fulfil their potential.
Beam Five – Fair Work and Fair Pay for All
Demonstrating a commitment to fairness, equality and good employment practices across the organisation.
These areas align closely with many of the initiatives already in place at Sweeney Miller Law, and we look forward to building on our success as we work towards achieving Advanced Accreditation.
Every member of staff has contributed to creating the culture, community impact and workplace environment recognised through this accreditation. We are proud that our efforts have been acknowledged through the SHINE programme and look forward to continuing our journey as a responsible employer that supports its people, clients and communities.
