Sweeney Miller Law Marks Mental Health Awareness Week 2023

This week (15 -21 May) is Mental Health Awareness Week 2023, an annual campaign by the Mental Health Foundation to raise awareness and increase conversations around the mental health issues faced by so many people in the UK.

The theme of this year’s campaign is anxiety, a normal emotion that everyone experiences but that can start to cause issues if it gets out of control and becomes unmanageable. As part of Mental Health Awareness Week, the Mental Health Foundation wants to increase awareness and understanding of anxiety by:

  • Providing information about things that can help stop anxiety becoming a problem.
  • Encouraging everyone to get involved and join in the conversation.
  • Keeping up pressure to demand change.
  • Demanding that mental health is a key priority for the government as a whole.

At Sweeney Miller Law, the mental health and wellbeing of our staff and clients is a top priority and we work hard to ensure that support is available to anyone who needs it. Several members of the firm, who are all senior lawyers or partners, are trained Mental Health England first aiders, and have been trained how to identify, understand and help any fellow colleagues who may be experiencing a mental health issue.

We also have access to a qualified counsellor for the benefit of staff, and our staff are encouraged to ask for support when needed.

Commenting on Mental Health Awareness Week, Surbhi Vedhara, Managing Director at Sweeney Miller Law, and one of the firm’s Mental Health First Aiders, said:

“The mental health and wellbeing of everyone at the firm is one of our highest priorities which is why we have a wide range of tools and procedures in place to support anyone who is experiencing challenges with mental health.

Legal professionals are at an exceptionally high-risk of mental ill-health which is why we are so focussed on ensuring our team have access to the right resources and support at all times. Supporting Mental Health Awareness Week is a great way to keep this front of mind and highlights that mental health issues must never be ‘swept under the carpet’”.
