Head of the Family Department at Sweeney Miller Law, Rebecca Cresswell, has featured in the latest edition of Northern Insight magazine.
In the article titled ‘Divorce during the cost-of-living crisis’, Rebecca reveals that some couples who no longer want to remain together are finding themselves unable to afford to get a divorce as household bills and the overall cost of living continues to rise. Households which had relied on two incomes may not be able to support themselves or any dependents on a single wage following a divorce and, with fluctuating inflation rates, house prices and interest rates, it can prove difficult to accurately resolve finances in the divorce.
Rebecca outlined some considerations couples could make before committing to a divorce which may alleviate what feels like an impossible decision including:
• Seeking marriage counselling before committing to separation.
• Obtaining expert financial advice if money is the main point of contention.
• Consider a DIY divorce.
• Making the most of free consultation offers from solicitors, such as Sweeney Miller’s free 30-minute no-obligation consultation.
Commenting on the challenges divorcing couples are facing during the current period of economic uncertainty, Rebecca said: “No one should feel forced to remain in an unhappy marriage just because their financial position will not allow them to leave. Against this background, many people unfortunately feel that there is nowhere to turn and they are trapped in a relationship, unable to move on with their lives. The team and I are always looking for ways to help our clients deal with these difficult situations and have some practical ideas that may be of help.”
