Location: The Catalyst, Newcastle 9am – 11am
This breakfast seminar brings together Sweeney Miller Law’s Employment and Commercial teams to explore how legal changes affecting people can quickly create strategic, operational and contractual consequences for the wider business.
Led by Paul Lott, Senior Associate & Head of Employment Law, and Rishi Kohli, Commercial Partner, this session is designed for senior leaders, business owners, and HR decision-makers who want to stay ahead of risk.
The end of 2025 brought with it a significant development for employers as the Employment Rights Act 2025 finally became law, with substantial changes that will affect all employers. The changes that this new legislation will bring will be implemented gradually over a two-year period, with most changes expected to take effect from April 2026 and onwards into 2027 and employers will need to prepare for these changes and consider their impact on workplace policies and business decision-making.
Paul will break down the key updates within the Employment Rights Act 2025, including increased statutory rights and protections for employees at an earlier stage in the employment relationship, and discuss what employers need to address immediately and moving forward across their HR function and day‑to‑day operations and management.
Rishi will then explore the commercial ripple effects by highlighting where the biggest risks emerge and when a commercial sense‑check becomes most valuable. Topics include:
- How employment law developments can strain operations, governance and supplier relationships
- Where business contracts may stop aligning with new employer responsibilities
- When organisations should reassess commercial agreements — particularly during disputes, restructures, growth phases or exit planning
The session will close with a joint Q&A session.
