North East solicitors Sweeney Miller are backing calls to ensure access to justice for all in the wake of cuts to legal aid. Proposals for a set of minimum standards to ensure access to justice for all have prompted the Law Society to warn that the justice system is at breaking point and that civil legal aid cuts will ultimately cost tax payers more than they will save. Responding to an interim report from the Bach Commission on Access to Justice, Law Society chief executive Catherine Dixon said: ‘The right to British justice should apply to everyone who is subject to the laws of this country irrespective of background or income. Workers across the region were represented by Isaac Abraham Solicitors’ in pursuit of compensation for accidents and industrial disease claims, particularly hearing loss cases. But now the industrial disease arm of the Bury-based firm is being investigated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA). Enforcement officers from the SRA took the action after concerns were raised over a number of hearing loss claims. Although no wrong doing has been established against the Isaac Abraham’s Solicitor at this stage, the intervention means Isaac Abraham can no longer deal with their Claimant ongoing cases. Sweeney Miller, one of Sunderland’s biggest law firms, has kicked off the latest sponsorship drive by the Sunderland and District Society of Association Football Referees with a £200 donation. The cash has been used to purchase essential TV and sound equipment for the association to use during its regular meetings when guest speakers update its members on technical issues, rules changes and best practice. The association, which is affiliated with the National Referees Association, formed back in 1906 to look after the welfare of referees and to give them help and guidance. The student lacerated his leg when he fell on a protruding bolt while playing at the bike and skate park in South Shields The case was vigorously defended by Council who blamed the dangerous bolt on vandals pulling out the fencing. But solicitors at Sunderland and Newcastle-based Sweeney Miller successfully argued that despite carrying out weekly health and safety inspections at the park, the Council failed to notice the protruding bolts over several months and failed to replace the broken fencing. The issue of liability remained in dispute and so court proceedings were pursued which led to the student receiving £5,155 in compensation for his injuries. Pupils at St Mary’s Primary School in Sunderland showed their artistic side to help promote road safety in the city. The school children joined forces with city law firm Sweeney Miller who challenged them to design a poster to spread the road safety message. Members of the Sweeney Miller team gave hundreds of pupils from St Mary’s a talk on road safety before inviting them to get creative.
